The Building

The Braintree Sixth Form is housed in a purpose built £6m building on the Notley site. The building has been designed with the aim of creating a professional working and learning environment suitable for young adults. The general and specialist teaching rooms are fully equipped with interactive whiteboards and fitted to the highest specifications. There are a range of specialist teaching areas including two Science labs, two large computer suites and a Music & Media studio. WiFi allows for considerable flexibility in the use of ICT, with students and staff having Internet access throughout the building.

Theatre

TheatreThe stunning 300 seat theatre provides a state of the art venue for theatrical and musical events as well as lectures and conferences. Fully equipped with programmable lighting desk and a professional sound rig including a 16 channel mixing desk, the theatre provides and versatile space for both Sixth Form productions and professional performances.
Students have the opportunity not only to use the theatre for performances but also to work behind the scenes and train with the theatre technician to operate the lighting and sound equipment during events.

Café

cafeThe Sixth Form has its own cafeteria which is open from 8am to 4pm each day. Staff and students can purchase food and drink from the staff on duty between those times, or from the vending machines outside of those times. The café offers a range of high quality food and drink, contemporary décor and a relaxed atmosphere. Options include pre-packed items for takeaway, pizza, paninis and sandwiches made to order, and a regularly changing lunchtime menu of hot meals.

Library

LibraryThe Sixth Form Library is located on the first floor of the Sixth Form building. The Library supports all A level Qualifications and the IB Diploma programme and promotes learning through a wide range of resources in a variety of media. Students have access to book based material, Online and E-resources, Periodicals, Journals, DVD and audio material. Photocopy and print facilities are also available. A range of National, International and Local Newspapers is also available for students to read in the library. Students have access to a Careers Library where information is available on Further and Higher Education, Employment, Occupations, Gap Year and Voluntary Work.

The library offers students a pleasant and conducive working environment where they can carry out group work, individual study and reading for leisure. Networked computers are available for use for research, essay writing, project work and access to the Library Catalogue.

“Oliver” is the Sixth Form computerised catalogue system which students can use to search for a book, Journal or e-resource. It holds records of all the resources available in the Sixth Form Library and the main Notley High School Library. The catalogue can be accessed from any networked computer in the Sixth Form and accessed remotely from home by logging on to the Sixth Form website.

The Library is open to students
Monday – Thursday from 8.30am – 4.30pm
Friday from 8.30am – 4.00pm

The library catalogue can be used to search for resources, view personal loan and loan history records, view selected reading lists to support studies and much more. Staff in the Library aim to assist students in all aspects of their research, study and personal development, helping students to become independent learners. Student social areas

The student common room has been designed to create a comfortable and informal social space. Students have access to lockers in their common room, and charging lockers for laptops under the main stairs. All lockers are activated with a £1 coin (returnable).

Sports facilities

Situated on the campus at Notley High School, students at the Braintree Sixth Form have access to the Notley Sports Centre which includes extensive playing fields, badminton courts, tennis courts, a gym, sports hall and dance studio.

A new £500,000 sports hall was opened on the site in September 2009.
