A Level Art

Course Summary

This is a creative and exciting course, and you will develop your artistic ability using a wide range of media. All students study a core curriculum covering drawing, mixed media, painting, sculpture, printmaking written analytical skills. Students will be encouraged to experience and experiment with a large range of media and techniques at a more sophisticated level, to develop a broad and balanced portfolio. Students will work from primary and secondary sources in the classroom and visit galleries regularly to experience the work of other artists first hand.

At the start of year 12 students undertake a foundation unit of work to develop their skills then in year 12 and 13 students will complete two creative projects.

Career Opportunities A level Art and Design is a strong basis for students who are considering entry to Art College or University Career areas include Architecture, Advertising/Visual Communications, Art teaching, Occupational Therapy, Museum/Gallery Curator, Conservation/Restoration, Interior/Graphic/Textile/ Fashion Design, etc. 

Past students have progressed to degree level reading subjects such as Fashion Marketing (University Arts London), Illustration (Manchester) and Fine Art (Norwich Arts University).

Grade 5 in Art. If Art has not been taken students must submit a portfolio.

Component 1 60%

This is a practical unit with a written element in which you are expected to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished piece or pieces.

  • 60% of final mark
  • 15 hour for outcome (AO4)
  • 1000-3000 word essay

Component 2 (ESA) 40%

Externally Set Assessment (ESA) is consisted of a 15 hour exam and a set of period to plan and prepare the piece working in a sketchbook. Approx. 3 months.
